I am a Registered Nurse by profession, who has always enjoyed braiding and doing hair. Throughout college, I did hair braiding, styling, and weaving. I believe that when hair is healthy and has a great style, people feel more confident about themselves! Healthy, nurtured, and styled hair can uplift your self esteem, especially when others comment on how good it looks.
My natural hair process: Of course, growing up as a 'black girl' in America, I was forced to wear the hairstyles that we were limited to. I went through the ‘jeri curl’ phase throughout most of my elementary years, then got my first perm going into middle school. I have always had very course and thick hair (Nappy as most would call it). Perms just never did my hair or scalp justice! There were moments where a super strength perm would keep my hair straight for the first 2 weeks...but don't wash it! The naps would return with a vengeance! I also had a serious dandruff problem while I had perms. No matter if I scratched my scalp or not, I would walk away from the salon with scabs & burns on my scalp and hair edges. Does this sound familiar to anyone?
In 2000, I decided to let my perm grow out...finally! I would press my roots and style my hair accordingly...but my hair was cut rather short and was hard to manage. Six months after that, I went to a natural hair shop/barber to get the permed part cut off. Needless to say, I walked away with the big chop! Sad about it at first, I went home, washed my head, put some gel in it, and the rest was history! How liberated I felt! This was a new experience for me and I have never looked back. So finally after years of creating styles for myself, in 2008 I got serious about sharing my experience with others. I enrolled in a natural hair class by Taliah Waajid and started my business.
Don't let anyone tell you that your natural hair isn't beautiful! That is part of what makes YOU who you are. Beauty is skin deep and has nothing to do with having straight, processed, or chemically-damaged hair. Seeing how free and satisfied I am about my natural hair has inspired many of my friends and family to be liberated from the chemical process. And they love it!
